Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur has awarded Rebecca Fong and Mike T. as the winner for Benkay’s ID Challenge. Commenced in early September 2007, the challenge was mainly to encourage local students from colleges and university to contribute their fresh idea….on the ‘new and contemporary look’ of Benkay Japanese Restaurant, which was located at Level 1, Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur. With this, the Restaurant will be going for a massive make-over somewhere in mid- year of 2008. So far, the Hotel has renovated other areas which includes the guestrooms, Business Centre, Bentley’s Pub and function rooms.
Two other shortlisted team members also attended this event, which were Team 1; Ching May Yee, Chin Su Ching and Martin Teo and Team 2; Ng Foong Wai and George Ho Chun Jen, both teams from Bandar Utama International College. These three teams were shortlisted out of 100 participants. Rebecca Fong and Mike T. has walked away with cash prize of RM5,000, a 3-day 2-night stay in Royal Suite Room valued at RM26,000.00. Each team has presented their unique design whereby the winner Rebecca and Mike has focused on ‘Japanese tattoo and fusion concept’.
Three of the team members were given a chance to present their idea and design concept; juried by Y Bhg Datin Catherine Lai, Michael Borostyan (General Manager of Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur) and Ron Brooks (Resident Manager of Hotel Nikko Kuala Lumpur). Y Bhg Datin Catherine Lai is a renowned interior designer in her own right who also has her own interior design review column with a major local English daily. The judges picked the winner based on the following criteria: overall design concept, zoning and circulation, colour matching, lighting, furniture and fixture matching and suitability of material use and of course the most important factor of all…the ‘wow’ factor.
